Field Session 2020

Field Session 2020 students share their impressions of being Mines Physics undergraduates.

Mines is a tightknit community making engineering advancements and making the world a better place.

People truly care about each other and think like each other, like scientists and engineers, so I’m able to connect with people in a way I wasn’t able to in high school.

… with the overwhelming support you really have an opportunity to be adventurous with your personal and professional connections, hobbies, …

… a place to make friends and connections that will last a lifetime.

Colorado School of Mines is the best engineering school in Colorado, so if you like math and science, this is the place for you.

Physics is the perfect major for those that don’t know what they want to do, because it’s incredibly applicable to any field.

… you have a recipe for a truly fun and welcoming program.

… Mines really respects undergrads, and faculty understand that they contribute meaningfully to their projects.

… [Physics] gives you a basis to understand the whole world around you and that it really gives you the mindset to tackle complex problems …

Coming to Mines has made me appreciate how much work professors put into your education as a whole and all the opportunities we’re given here at Mines from research to projects that we can do to just the people around here. It’s all just a wonderful experience that really gets you involved in anything you want to do.

Coming to Mines has really made me understand that college isn’t just about learning new things and learning new material necessarily, but it’s more about learning the problem-solving process and just learning how to tackle things that you didn’t think that you might be capable of.

… what fascinates me about physics is that it is, by definition, the study of everything. … engineering physics gives an excellent foundation for any STEM job. … A physics major serves as a solid foundation for any graduate degree or engineering position at a company …

While I do love Mines for its academic programs, it has many other wonderful things to offer as well. To me, the most valuable of these is a caring, close-knit community. Everyone at Mines looks out for one another and ensures that each and every student has the tools and environment necessary to achieve success.

By its nature, physics is a collaborative body of science. A college environment, even when not face-to-face, as some of us have gotten a chance to witness, provides an atmosphere that allows for constant collaboration. This remains true in class, research projects, and even in general conversation with peers. Idea generation is heavily promoted in that sense.

If you are searching for a physics degree, then look no further than beautiful Golden, CO, where the Mines M rests above the city as a message for students to climb and succeed.

There’s a lot of fascinating things about physics. One of the main things that always interested me was just being able to understand the world around you on a fundamental level; and then, knowing those fundamentals, you can do a lot of cool things … and, especially at Mines, you have the engineering focus, so you’re able to apply those fundamental skills in different areas, in different fields …

… at Mines you have to learn to ask for help, because everyone is so willing to give you help …before I came to Mines, I really never had to ask. … once I was willing to ask, everyone was so kind and willing … it’s a community at Mines.

… I’m a member of SPS … a group of people that meets together once a week, who happen to love physics, … go and they talk and have a good time … we have outings … this year we went to Boulder to a tea shop and we went hiking. … There are so many groups on campus like that … The sense of community that it brings is just amazing.

I think Mines is a great place to study physics, and I hope to one day help to answer the questions that we seek about the universe. … everyone here is goal-oriented and productive in a way that motivates us all together.

… our research is very extensive and operates in a wide variety of areas of interest whether that be experimental or theoretical. I really feel like it helps me set the stage for what would be my life as a graduate student …

I originally was interested in physics because it’s the study of everything … It’s a lot of fun learning how things work and physics is the place to do that.

Besides Physics, Mines has a lot of great opportunities. Extracurriculars are really large here. There are club sports, intramural sports, … and it’s made me appreciate college as a whole more, besides it just being studies …

… the best part of being in Colorado, in my opinion, besides the people, is you’re in probably one of the best states in the country. When you’re not studying, you can go snowboarding, or go hiking, or go camping, and make it back into Sunday to keep on with your studies.

I really like the friends I’ve made. They’re probably the best friends I’ve ever had, and Colorado is a great state to be outdoors.

At Mines we have a lot of extracurricular activities which can help to blow off some steam and not think about schoolwork. I’m in the National Society of Black Engineers which has been a really good community for me; and, I’m also part of SPS and Solar Decathlon. So, there are a lot of options …

Mines has such a feeling of community, especially during our E-days in the Spring and our extracurricular showcase in the Fall, our Discover Mines event. There are so many clubs you can get involved with. I got involved with the intramural Battleship which was very fun.

I take part in the Society of Physics students, a major-specific organization as well as playing intramural Ultimate Frisbee as a fun past-time. There’s something for everyone. I also work on campus as a TA for Introductory Physics.

In addition to developing a profound understanding of how the world around us works, we have the opportunity to study new areas of physics that are still not fully understood, including quantum mechanics and gravity and Einstein’s theory of general relativity, and to participate in new research toward a potential theory of everything or Grand Unified Theory. … This is incredibly exciting to imagine that our subject of study is capable of world-changing paradigm shifts.

I really like how flexible the degree in physics is from microelectronics to academic research specializing in a field like quantum engineering or working at a data-science or software company. The options are endless in terms of what the physicist can do in the real world.

Mines is generally though of as a heavily academically-focused school. There’re lots of things you can do outside of it. Golden is really close to Denver. We can go to a number of sporting events or concert venues. If you prefer to stay near Mines, in Golden, the community is great and there’s a lot that you can do … I absolutely love being a student at Mines. I’m constantly meeting new people and making new friends, and I never run out of fun activities to do.

— to get a feel for what Mines really is, rather than just a beautiful place, is meeting the students. So, if you come to campus, make sure you engage with some of the students.

I’ve always just been really fascinated in physics because I have a deep love for math and I like applying it to the real world, and, definitely, here in the Physics Department, there’s a lot of opportunities to do that.

I really enjoy Mines’ Engineering Physics Department because I’m able to take my major in Engineering Physics and go to almost any graduate department … at school

Being able to work with all of the brilliant students and faculty that are here at Mines has been amazing.

Something that I have always found very interesting about physics … I’ve always been a really curious person and Mines has given me the ability to answer a lot of the things that I’ve always been curious about.

… there’s a great community at Mines. You really get to know a lot of the other people especially in your major, especially in engineering physics, because it’s one of the smaller majors.

I’m a transfer student coming from a community college … coming from a one-building college to an entire campus with very driven and serious individuals …

What I really enjoy about physics is the ability to explain new things and there’s never 100% an answer. There’s always something new to learn about. …Mines … it’s a very collaborative environment and everybody’s always willing to help one another.

One thing that I love about being a student here at Mines is the short commute time to the mountains.

… at Mines there’s a ton of opportunities for you to either get involved in activities such as research or different groups to make contributions to the community, or to go and participate in teaching … or mentor-ship, all sorts of things.
