About the Society

The Society of Physics Students at  Colorado School of Mines is a professional association affiliated with the American Institute of Physics. Membership is open to anyone interested in physics.

The organization builds community, provides opportunities for improving effective communication and presentation, and reaches out to the campus and Golden community to help spread interest and excitement about science.

The local organization has been designated as an outstanding SPS Chapter by the national office, and has also won the Marsh White Award for community service. However, the main outcome of SPS is plenty of good times for the members.

This year, the Mines SPS Chapter sent 3 members to collaborate with the CSU SPS Chapter in Fort Collins, Colorado, at CSU’s Little Shop of Physics. This was our second year working with them in what should become an annual partnership. Our members were able to experience physics outreach further away from our hometown of Golden, explore demonstration possibilities, and interact on a more intimate level with another SPS chapter.

Mitchell Elementary School in Golden, CO hosted it’s third annual STEM night where local organizations, many of them from Mines, sent demonstrations and volunteers to teach kids about different STEM subjects. Our chapter brought interactive physics demos to share with students and their parents. This is our third year of attending, and we’re looking forward to future participation in what looks to be a solidifying tradition.
