Society of Physics Students
About the Society
The Society of Physics Students at Colorado School of Mines is a professional association affiliated with the American Institute of Physics. Membership is open to anyone interested in physics.
The organization builds community, provides opportunities for improving effective communication and presentation, and reaches out to the campus and Golden community to help spread interest and excitement about science.
The local organization has been designated as an outstanding SPS Chapter by the national office, and has also won the Marsh White Award for community service. However, the main outcome of SPS is plenty of good times for the members.
As one of the host institutions for the conference, Mines also welcomed more than 200 attendees to the Edgar Experimental Mine in Idaho Springs.

This year, the Mines SPS Chapter sent over 30 students to the SPS National Conference, which was conveniently held right in our backyard in Denver. By attending, our members had the opportunity to network with physics students from across the country, learn about potential career paths, and hear from professionals working in a wide variety of fields. The conference provided valuable opportunities for both professional development and building connections within the broader physics community.
As one of the host institutions for the conference, Mines also welcomed more than 200 attendees to the Edgar Experimental Mine in Idaho Springs. Everyone who attended the SPSCon Edgar Mine Tour with us posed with Blaster the Burro once they arrived back to campus with all of their decked out hardhats.
This year, the Mines SPS Chapter sent 10 members to collaborate with the CSU SPS Chapter in Fort Collins, Colorado, at CSU’s Little Shop of Physics. This was our third year working with them and continues to build what we hope will become an annual partnership. Our members were able to participate in physics outreach outside of Golden, see how another chapter approaches outreach events, and connect with fellow SPS members from another institution. It was a great opportunity to share ideas and learn from one another while helping inspire interest in physics.
Devoted To Community Outreach
Mitchell Elementary School in Golden, CO hosted it’s fourth annual STEM Night where local organizations, many of them from Mines, sent demonstrations and volunteers to teach kids about different STEM subjects. Our chapter brought interactive physics demos to share with students and their parents. We wanted to help foster an interest in physics among the students and encouraged them to ask questions and explore the demos themselves. This is our fourth year of attending, and the students were as engaged as ever in all of our demonstrations.
Every year, the Society of Physics Students at Mines holds Fall Into Physics, formerly known as Haunted Physics Lab, and Spring Into Physics.
