Wouter Van De Pontseele
Assistant Professor, Department of Physics
Professor Wouter Van De Pontseele leads the Quantum Technologies at the Sensitivity Frontier group, which develops advanced superconducting sensors and cryogenic instrumentation to search for rare particle interactions. The group’s research focuses on creating low-threshold superconducting detectors and quantum-limited amplifiers for fundamental physics. These technologies are applied in collaborations with major international experiments, including Project 8, which aims to measure the neutrino mass, and the Ricochet experiment, which studies neutrinos at a nuclear reactor. A key local project is the development of the CURIE low-background facility, where the group is designing and installing shielding in the Edgar Experimental Mine to create an ultra-quiet environment for sensitive experiments. This work is supported by collaborations with industry partners like Maybell Quantum and national labs such as NIST.
